The Foundry Viognier, Stellenbosch, 2018 South Africa

Superlative: 90/100

The best of South African wine

The Foundry winery was conceived by Chris William over the kitchen table. It has probably made some of the best wine in the Cape region over the last 20 years.

Not only has Chris has run the Foundry ever since, but in 2004 when Giorgio Dalla Cia retired he took over the reigns as lead winemaker at the famous Meerlust Estate in Stellenbosch.

In 2019 Chris resigned from Meerlust to focus on the Foundry.

The Viognier is grown in a single vineyard, South Westerly slope about 6 km from False bay which enjoys a cool maritime on-shore Atlantic breeze. The soils are granite-clay loams which restrict yield and allow for retention of acidity and varietal aroma.

To the bottle

The Foundry Viognier 2018 is pale in colour, clear and bright with a pronounced greenish hue.

The nose is exotic with expressive apricot, spring blossom and creamy citrus nose, but remains elegant and perfumed.

These flavours follow through onto the palate which is dense with ripe crushed fresh fruit, succulent juiciness and finishes with a mineral steeliness which makes this wine ideal with food.

There is a line of natural acidity running through the wine maintaining freshness and focus.
